In many organizations, it is prudent policy to select project managers and higher level project management executives from within the organization. It may be the selections are based on high performance in other disciplines, but they may not have sufficient project management experience or training. In this situation, it is appropriate to transition these managers into their new responsibility roles by the use of highly experienced Mentors. The mentoring process may be applied as ongoing support until confidence is developed in the managers. It may then be appropriate to provide interim mentoring support to refine PM skills and facilitate full competence and maturity of PM deliveries.
